5:45 PM - 8:00 PM Trauma - Informed Mindfulness Practices
As mental health professionals, college students, professors, educators, parents and caregivers we are tasked with creating safe places and healthy connections to help others grow and thrive.  But challenges abound, resistance happens.  A single word can trigger shutdowns and confrontations can bring on hurtful behaviors.  One cause for these challenges is Trauma.  We need to assume there is trauma in the room.  This session will focus on education and exploration of approaches that can fit the kitchen table, the classroom, the clinical office and beyond.  These practices also can prepare us for those interactions, help us handle them well, and soothe ourselves afterward - managing our own compassion fatigue.  Participants will try out a few mindful practices for self-care, consider the usefulness of trauma-informed practices across the community and learn mindful, choice strategies as well as attention practices that are relevant in a variety of settings.  Wynee-Kinder, MEd from Wellness Works in Lancaster will be presenting this workshop which is sponsored by NAMI KU.
